Drove this today at a local meet. I couldn't really get my foot into it but it seemed to have its drive train in order. The interior/body/accessories were all in bad shape but I know the owner and his main concern is the driveability. Clutch, brakes, and throttle were all solid and the car's balance did not seem to be upset, but to be fair I've never even driven an FD with a proper wankel so I have nothing to judge it against. How do we feel about this? are we tired of LS swaps? Has the ubiquitous LS swap jumped the shark? That is, in the sense that perhaps auto-enthusiasm is becoming slightly more homogenous because of their prevalence. I can't fault the powerplant, it is very good at what it does but I can't help but wonder if we are becoming complacent to them. Am I totally wrong? Drinking too much? What do you think of LS swaps in the grander scheme of things?

If your going to put an LS in a rx7, do it in a first gen or something... for the love of god spare the third gens. They are such a collectors piece for rotary lovers to find an unmolested one...

I feel like that is fanboyism. Why is preserving the past so important? I'm not saying I disagree but why exactly? Wankel fandom needs a thesis that transcends "beacause..."

to be fair I loved the car and even had a fleeting fantasy of owning it. my feeling is that the car is beautiful as is and only needs to have the wire tuck completed and the interior trim replaced (although rx-7 fd parts are $$$ as I understand) I need to talk to the owner and see if I can get more pictures of the car and maybe give it a nice long drive. There is something sublime about this car.

Because amazing power to weight. Unique. Rx7 has great chassis/handling.

You know and LS only weighs like a 100 something pounds more than a 13b right? plus it has something called torque.

An LS does very little to upset that balance.

The 13b weights little over 100lbs less than the Ls1 and thats including the twin turbo weight on the 13b.

Is this dry weight or wet weight though? That'll make a huge difference too. And what about the extra cooling required for the 13B?
I think rotaries deserve to be preserved, especially at this point with no future rotary officially established and definitely not soon regardless. However, for every RX7 that is LS-swapped, something else is getting a rotary thrown into it as well. So the idea of preserving a chassis is quite different, and I don't feel that you can make one generation a red-headed stepchild in comparison to another in that situation either.

I personally just like cars with their original engine, or at least same company engine. I feel like in this case you take something that is special and unique and make it into some bastardized form of itself. Take for instance the mighty 2jz, I really like Supras, hope to have a mkiv some day but all the 2jz implants to other make cars i just cant get behind. Plus it isn't like the 13b is poor performer in the output category like some frequent swap candidates engines are. But in the end, to each his own, if this is what makes the owner happy who am I to tell him he shouldn't be. I wouldn't preform this and i feel like you have destroyed resale value, but it isn't my car.
